On Jan. 18, sevneth graders took a trip to the indoor climbing gym, AZ on the Rocks in support of our seventh grade English classes’ study of the novel Banner in the Sky. The novel deals with the protagonist’s challenge to conquer the mountain that claimed his father’s life. Although the trip to the rock gym is a far cry from a trip to the European alps, it did give the students first-hand experience with top-rope climbing, working with a belay system, the challenge of pushing oneself to “climb on!”

Ms. Hafty, Mr. Peterson, and Mr. Brennan supervised the trip along with a number of parent volunteers. Over 90 FHMS students attended the event. The staff at AZ On the Rocks did an excellent job of training and assisting the students and the grown ups in order to ensure a safe outing for all.
