FHMS parent and MD, Richard Rutkowski contacted Mr. Brennan last spring about a tobacco diversion program called Tar Wars. Today, Dr. Rutkowski and his colleagues presented the program to all of our FHMS sixth graders to alert them to the realities and dangers of tobacco use as their middle school career begins. Presenters pictured above are: Joe Summers, Richard Rutkowski, Jed Madella Andre Jones, Dawn Reeves, Dale yavitt.
The Tar Wars program is an educational program from the American Academy of Family Physicians, and is presented by voluteers from the Scottsdale Healthcare Fmaily Medicine Residency Program. Student participants learned about the short term effects of tobacco use; how smoking impacts the respiratory system; financial implications of tobacco use; reasons people use tobacco; and tobacco and advertising.
FHMS appreciates the efforts of our community volunteers who gave their time to our students today!

Students in Mrs. Olson’s sixth grade English classes shared an important book from their past on Aug. 22. Mrs. Olson asks students to bring in a book to share that has had an impact on their life. Most students brought in memorable books they enjoyed reading. Mrs. Olson points out that students could also bring in a book the HATED! One of her most despised books from the past was Moby Dick. Of course, Mrs. Olson typically loves books, and she shared a number of her favorites with her classes. Even Mr. Brennan and Mrs. Gomez answered the call and brought in books to share with the students.
