Arizona State Attorney General Speaks to Eighth Graders

Published by Mr. Brennan under Classroom Activities

FHMS was proud to host an Internet safety forum presented by Arizona State Attorney General, Terry Goddard today. Mr. Goddard makes this presentation to Arizona schools “about once a week.” Mr. Brennan contacted the AG’s office after receiving a copy of an Internet safety manual for parents and teens back in September.

Mr. Goddard gave some powerful examples of what can happen when kids become careless on Internet forums such as MySpace. An AG staffer brought the point home by showing the FHMS students how he created a phoney MySpace page and identified himself as a student moving to Fountain Hills. Fifty-two Fountain Hills youth invited 14-year-old “Troy” to be a MySpace “friend,” not realizing the page actually belong to an adult with the AG’s office. To make the point even more startling, one FH child identified another FH child by first and last name, thus creating a gateway for “Troy” to locate the second child’s home. The demonstration showed FHMS eighth graders how easy it is for a predator to work thorugh MySpace to find unsuspecting students.

Additional copies of the Internet Safety Guide for Parents are available in the FHMS lobby. Mr. Brennan, Ms. Dudziak, or Mrs. Gomez are able to speak to any parents about Internet safety. For more information on Internet safety, click on the link below to the Arizona Attorney General’s office.

Make Your Arizona Tax Credit Donation On-Line!

Published by Mr. Brennan under Mr. B's News

Tax credit donation season is upon us! Actually, the entire calendar year is tax credit donation season, but we usually see a spike in activity as the calendar year comes to a close and citizens get those donations in for the 2008 tax year.

This year, FHUSD has made it even easier for Arizona tax payers to contribute to our school. Simply visit the district web site (www.fhusd.org) and click on the “School Tax Credits” tab. Click on the link below to read an article about the donation process.

Generosity

Published by Mr. Brennan under Mr. B's News

Mr. James Sercu is a generous citizen. In each of the past seven years, he has provided a scholarship to fund two eighth grade students for the annual science trip to Catalina Island. Mr. Sercu makes the donation, and eighth grade science teacher Dr. Sharin Manes consults with administration to award the scholarships to students who would not otherwise be able to afford the trip to the sea.

We appreciate Mr. Sercu’s continued generosity to FHMS and FHUSD!

In addition to individual acts of generosity, we are often fortunate to receive generous contributions from corporations. FHMS recently received $840 from Intel. This award is also connected to the Catalina trip. Intel makes contributions to non-profit agencies when Intel employees give volunteer time to the non-profit. In this case, Intel employee Mr. Chris Michaelis attended the March 2008 Catalina trip as a parent volunteer. Thanks to Mr. Michaelis’ generous donation of his time, the Earthquest Science Club received $840 which will be applied toward the Catalina Island trip.

Target is another corporation that makes contributions to the community. In October, Mr. Brennan received a check for $253 from Target. Funds are generated by local shoppers who use the Target “Red” card, a Target Visa, or the Target Credit card. Shoppers can designate a school to recieve 1% of all purchases made with one of these cards. Over the past 11 years, Target has donated $9099 to FHUSD schools through the “Take Charge of Education” program. Any target shopper can help FHMS by linking one of the Target cards to FHMS. For more information contact Mr. Brennan or visit Target.com. Our local Target store also has sign-up information. So, link your card to FHMS, and get out there and SHOP, SHOP, SHOP!
