AIC 2010 Weathers the Storm

Published by under Student Activities

The Fourth Annual Arts in the Courtyard celbration was somewhat hampered by foul weather; however, the show must go on! By the end of the evening, all performers were able to take the stage, but not without some improvisation and shuffling of the published performance schedule.

“I trusted that the weather would cooperate, so I told Mr. Margraf to set up as normal,” said FHMS Principal, Mr. Brennan. Although the forcast called for “isolated” thunderstorms, Mr. Brennan and his advisors (Mrs. Waldo) remained confident that the rain would simply not fall on AIC.

After two songs performed by Mr. Brennan on his guitar, the choir opened the show at 5:10 p.m. The dancers followed with their first set of the night, and then came beginning band in the gym. This is where the improvisation began. The weather started to turn before the dancers were to take the stage for their second set. Mr. B made the call to disassemble the sound and lighting systems once a light rain began to fall.  Although the rain stopped, the dancers were not allowed to perform on their outdoor dance floor considering how wet and slipper it was. Mr. Brennan asked all performers to be patient while he watched the weather. Since the band was set up indoors, their sets went on without a delay.

At approximately 6:50 p.m., Mr. Brennan and staff were getting ready to re-set the sound and light systems for the final performances. However, before the job was far along, the skies opened up, and a torrential downpour struck.  Aside from a few crazy eighth graders who enjoy dancing in the rain, the courtyard cleared and the multipurpose room and gym filled. Mr. Brennan made a quick decision to move the band equipment to the sides of the gym and allow the dancers and drama club to perform in the gym.

In the end, all student groups were able to perform, the meal from the Ahnala restaurant was excellent, and the student art displays were wonderful. Thank you to all who supported Arts in the Courtyard 2010.

Geography Bee Draws a Crowd

Published by under Student Activities

Contestants 3FHMS hosted the 4-8 Geography Bee today in the eighth grade team room. Students from Four Peaks and FHMS competed to earn a spot as the district representative at the next level. The final two contenstants standing at the end were Iggy Macaluso, grade 5, and Quinn Amick, grade 6. Iggy managed to answer the all-important final question to earn first place honors and to be crowned (well, medaled, actually) as the 2009 FHUSD Geography Bee champion. FHMS teachers, Mr. Peterson and Mr. Spaeth served as organizers and moderators for the event.

Students faced challenging questions on cities, rivers, states, countries, landforms, and people from around the globe. Way to go Iggy and Quinn. You withstood the challenge from your student peers as well as from students one or two years ahead of you, and you prevailed!Finalists

Champion Iggy

Ambassadors Bring Positive Message

Published by under Student Activities

The Harlem Ambassadors testified to a “stay in school, stay off drugs” lifestyle during a 60-minute presentation to FHMS students on Feb. 26. The Ambassadors visited FHMS compliments of Four Peaks Rotary.

The Ambassadors travel all around the world sharing their individual stories of triumph over adversity. Each Ambassador spoke to the FHMS student body assempbled in the gym during the assembly.

FHMS seventh grader Cody Dunham was honored to receive a personalized jersey and tickets to the game for coming up with the FH team name: Desert Dunkers.

Jesse, the “tour manager” explained that in order to be a member of the troupe, each Ambassador must already have a college degree, or be in the process of earning a degree, AND each member must be drug free. Jesse told students not to let anyone deter them from their dreams.

Each Ambassador spoke to students for a few minutes to deliver messages such as:

Love your parents! Stay in school! Surround yourself with positive peers! Follow your dreams! If you believe it, you can achieve it! Get addicted to something positive! Stick with your dream even though you may face failure!

The Ambassadors faced (and defeated) a team of Fountain Hills dignitaries at a game in the FHHS gym on the evening of Feb. 26. FHMS is proud to have been a part of the Harlem Ambassadors’ visit to FH!
